Fire stations and communities help raise record-breaking £96,000 for The Fire Fighters Charity through unwanted clothes donations

Fire stations right across the UK have raised more than £89,000 for The Fire Fighters Charity through unwanted clothes donations in January – contributing to a grand total of over £96,000, when added to the Charity’s other community recycling sites.

More than 450 tonnes of clothes were dropped off at the Charity’s clothing banks outside 966 fire stations and in community recycling sites, as part of its annual Bag it and Bank it Recycling Championship.

This nationwide effort not only helped to re-divert a huge amount of unwanted clothing away from landfill but it will also help The Fire Fighters Charity continue to support thousands of fire and rescue service personnel and their families, empowering them to live happier and healthier.

Chatteris Fire Station in Cambridgeshire collected the most clothing this year across the UK – an incredible 4.68 tonnes – taking first place in the Championship, having generated a huge income of £1,030.

Kevin Biles, The Fire Fighters Charity’s Sales Manager, said: ‘Our supporters have gone above and beyond over the last few weeks to once again reach record-breaking success in our Bag it and Bank it Recycling Championship. We’re incredibly grateful to each and every one of them.

‘Every year I’m amazed at the dedication and commitment shown by fire stations and their local communities – and to raise such a fantastic amount this year shows just how much of a difference your recycling is making. Thanks to you, these funds will ensure we can continue to offer our life-changing support to fire service personnel and their families in the years ahead.’

With The Fire Fighters Charity relying almost entirely on donations to fund its vital work, none of the support it offers individuals in the fire services community would be possible without the generosity of its supporters.
