LION’s New Fire Technology Training (NFTT) solution redefines fire-safety training. Next to privileging a conscious yet realistic and practical approach to fire training and its requirements, LION created, based on 20 years of field experience, a comprehensive cost-calculation tool that could assist training centres in evaluating the total cost of ownership of their facilities. Through customer interaction, LION sought to improve training methods and explore new technologies for fire responder readiness. This led to the conceptualization of the Total Cost of Ownership tool. The LION NFTT concept underscores the economic, safety and environmental benefits of integrating diverse training technologies by emphasizing the adequate integration of wood, gas and digital simulations. Different types of technology offer unique benefits when it comes to training. Wood-based training is highly valuable for getting a better understanding of smoke behaviour and fire dynamics. Gas-based setups, on the other hand, are more effective for simulating intense and hot tactical scenarios. Digital technology provides unbeatable high-frequency and repetitive training exercises. Additionally, it allows for training in highly realistic settings, including actual building environments, which is critical for practical skills development.

We witnessed several misconceptions surrounding the costs and effectiveness of traditional versus modern training methods, showcasing LION’s tool as a game-changer in demonstrating a mixed-method approach’s long-term cost-effectiveness and sustainability. The tool provides a thorough evaluation of the complete cost of ownership, which includes the initial purchase price, operational expenses, service and maintenance fees, and expenses related to end-of-life disposal. This unique tool improves LION’s sales strategy and expands the range of fire-safety training, in line with contemporary environmental awareness and the demand for environmentally friendly training solutions.

Traditional training methods, such as wood burning, can be physically demanding for trainers due to the intense heat and water loss. Moreover, they contribute to pollution from the burning materials, which poses long-term health risks. This pollution releases harmful particles, increasing the risk of inhalation-related health issues. Alternatively, training in a cleaner environment with alternative technologies can provide similar experiences with less physical strain. This can reduce long-term health risks and benefit both trainees and trainers by minimizing exposure to harmful particles.
