After 31 years of service, upon retirement from the Fire and Rescue Service in October 2023, Carl started providing organisational and leadership development, coaching and mentoring support.
Carl joined North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service as a Firefighter in 1992 and served in every operational role up to Area Manager. During this time, he undertook a wide variety of operational, specialist and managerial roles including Training Instructor, Development Centre Manager, Communications and District Manager. During his time in training, Carl led the introduction of fire behaviour training and spent time in Sweden gaining the European Fire Behaviour Training Instructor qualification. As a Group Manager, Carl spent a significant amount of time responsible for several geographical areas and fire stations, before moving onto more specialist roles, including Human Resources, Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Operational Assurance.
In 2016, Carl was appointed to the role of Area Manager, where he had strategic level responsibility as part of the Services Corporate Management Board, including gold-level incident command. His responsibilities included people and organisational development, human resources, learning and development, operational assurance, occupational health and safety, industrial relations, negotiation and dispute resolution.
In 2020, Carl was appointed as the Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Director of Community Protection for Cleveland Fire Brigade, with strategic-level responsibility for operations where he finished his career.
