Firefighters from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) appeared on BBC Midlands Today last night (28th January) in a feature that revealed the trauma capabilities of the Service and demonstrated the new lifesaving kit that Watch Commander Thom Morgan has recently helped develop.
HWFRS is the first fire service in the country to have rolled out this new trauma kit that allows firefighters to deal with any time critical, life threatening injuries more efficiently. Not only is the kit more compact and lightweight, but it also contains all of the vital equipment needed, which is packed in the relevant order. This means that the firefighter can methodically work through a patient assessment using the kit like an aide memoire.
The new kit and the skills of the firefighters were demonstrated on the programme during a training exercise, which saw a badly injured young girl being treated following a road traffic collision.
Chief Fire Officer Mark Yates said: “Watch Commander Thom Morgan has worked very closely with military personnel at MARCH Trauma Systems Ltd to develop the Go Bag, which is completely bespoke to the fire service. We are extremely proud to be the first service in the country to have adopted this new trauma kit, which we believe has the potential to greatly improve casualty care at any incident we attend which involves trauma injuries. All fire stations in Herefordshire and Worcestershire also have an automatic external defibrillator and when considered with the Go Bag it is clear that firefighters now have a very positive role to play in casualty care.”
The programme is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and more information on the HWFRS can be found at www.hwfire.org.uk
